Three milestones. One historic moment. One transformative programme.

June 2026 marks three significant convergences: the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976, the 10th anniversary of Vonage YouthDev Solutions, and the 25th anniversary of our CEO Phemelo Kebinelang's career in youth and community development. For an organisation built entirely on the belief that South Africa's youth are its greatest resource, this is a mandate.

In response to three convergences, Vonage YouthDev Solutions has designed Relive Your Identity, a structured and deeply immersive Youth Month programme with five distinct flagship experiences in Soweto. These include a 1. pre-dawn re-enactment of the June 16 march route, 2. a 48-hour township immersion retreat in which youth live as 1976 students, 3. intergenerational testimony circles with struggle veterans on Youth Day itself, 4. an iGwijo Freedom Songs Masterclass, and 5. a guided heritage trail through Soweto's forgotten liberation sites. Every experience is designed to move youth from passive observers of history to active bearers of it.

Our investment in the youth of this country extends beyond the programme itself.

As Vonage YouthDev Solutions, we are committing R300 000 in combined financial and in-kind contributions to youth development this June:

STAKEHOLDERS: We are inviting the government, the private sector, organisations, and individuals to fund or sponsor youth within or outside their institutions to attend these events.

"On 16 June 1976, students walked into history. Most of them had no idea what was about to happen. They walked anyway. This is what you inherited. Have you ever asked yourself what you would have done?"

Fifty years have passed since that day. Fifty years since Hector Pieterson was photographed being carried through the streets of Soweto by Mbuyisa Makhubu. Fifty years since the world saw South Africa's youth refuse to be silenced. And in those fifty years, we have built a democracy, but somewhere along the way, too many of us stopped understanding what it cost.

On Tuesday, 2 June 2026, Vonage YouthDev Solutions is doing something that has never been done before at this scale: we are gathering 50 young South Africans at 5:00 am at Thomas Mofolo High School in Naledi and walking the exact June 16 route, step by step, guided by the men and women who were there when it happened.

✦ The exact 1976 march route— retraced in the dark, in the cold, in the silence of early morning. The same road. The same direction. Fifty years later.

✦ Struggle veterans walking beside you— sharing first-hand accounts at memorial stops that exist nowhere in any history book. What they saw, felt, and carried from that day.

✦ Sunrise ceremony at the Hector Pieterson Memorial— poetry, freedom songs, and intergenerational dialogue as the sun rises over Soweto. A moment you will carry for the rest of your life.

✦ Traditional breakfast on Vilakazi Street— breaking bread in the most historically significant street in post-apartheid South Africa, in the company of those who helped make it so.

✦ Your Certificate of Participation— formal acknowledgement that you chose to know, to walk, and to carry this forward.

This is not a tour. This is not a commemoration event where you watch from the sidelines. This is a reckoning of six hours in which your relationship with your own history changes permanently. Youth who walk this route do not walk away the same. They walk away anchored.
