Why “ICT Skills” is a Buried Programme

I’m back in full swing after a short two-week break.
Hope you’re good and looking forward to a great week ahead.
I’m still unpacking Y-GIDE (Youth Generating Income through the Digital Economy), our programme aimed at balancing the equation between skills and income.
We believe skills should lead to income generation and not unemployment or lack of access to economic opportunities.
Let’s GO!
The truth we all know but rarely say out loud: “ICT Skills” is a buried programme.
It’s tired, stagnant, and uninspiring.
Most importantly, it’s a proven failure.
Governments and SETAs have pushed ICT Skills hard for over two decades, yet youth unemployment stubbornly hovers around 40%.
If this model worked, wouldn’t the crisis be over by now?
It hasn’t, because it was never built for the 2026 economy.
The hard reality?
ICT Skills don’t equal economic participation.
They don’t equal job creation.
And they certainly don’t equal bank notifications.
The digital economy is a whole different beast.
It demands a different mindset and leads to different outcomes.
While traditional programmes focus on teaching youth how to “use computers,” Y-GIDE teaches them how to learn, create, launch and monetise in a global (not local) marketplace that couldn’t care less about your location.
The old world says: “Here’s how you type and populate the spreadsheet.”
Y-GIDE says: “Here’s how you weaponise your hard hustled data to build an income and a life.”
To the government, private sector, and SETAs: South African youth don’t need more “skills development.”
That train has left Park Station, and it’s empty.
What we need now is the Digital Economy Activation Programme.
The era of training for training’s sake is over.
Once upon a time in my life, I was that person, training for numbers and reporting.
Not anymore.
The era of the online earners has begun.
And only Y-GIDE holds the blueprint.
