RELIVE YOUR IDENTITY
WHAT: iGwijo Masterclass - Freedom Songs & Resistance Anthems
WHEN: Tuesday, 23 June 2026
TIME: 12:00 pm - 18:00
WHERE: Soweto Community Hall
COST: R3 900
"When they sang 'Senzeni Na' outside the jail, the prisoners inside heard it and knew: you are not forgotten. When they sang at the march, the rhythm was designed to keep people moving past fear. When they sang at funerals, the melody carried a plan. iGwijo was not music. It was the connection of the liberation movement and could propel even the bystander to join in the struggle for freedom."
Today I want to tell you about something that will surprise you. Out of the five experiences in Relive Your Identity, this is the one that participants least expect to be the one they talk about the most. They arrive thinking it's a singing workshop.ย They leave having received a masterclass in strategic communication, collective psychology, and the most sophisticated coding system South Africa's liberation movement ever deployed.
Theย iGwijo Freedom Songs Masterclassย brings igwijo masters and struggle leaders into a Soweto community hall on 23 June 2026 to do something that has almost never been done: teach the actual meaning, word by coded word, and rhythm by engineered rhythm of the songs that carried South Africa's liberation movement through decades of darkness.ย Not the melodies. The architecture.ย And then, at the end of the day, participants stand and perform what they have learned, at full voice in a live performance that is professionally recorded and for them to keep.
๐ต WHAT THE MASTERCLASS TEACHES
โฆ The coded architecture of liberation songs โ specific lyrics, specific signals, and specific messages embedded in songs that the security forces couldn't decode but that every activist understood instantly.
โฆ Morale engineering through rhythm โ why certain rhythms were designed to make exhausted people keep marching, keep fighting, and keep believing when everything said stop.
โฆ Spiritual warfare through song โ the dimension of iGwijo that history books almost never discuss: how collective singing altered the psychological and spiritual state of participants in ways that overcame fear.
โฆ Contemporary freedom songs โ what would today's students sing. Participants collaborate to create or adapt a verse addressing today's struggles in the iGwijo tradition.
โฆ Live performance and professional recording โ the day ends on a Soweto community hall stage, performing at full voice, recorded for keeps. This is the most shareable moment in the entire programme.
For sponsors and organisations, this event produces the most compelling visual and audio content in the programme.ย Fifty youth in Vonage shirts singing liberation songs at full voice in a Soweto community hall, guided by the slogan master who understands everything about these songs, this footage is organic, brand-safe, and culturally significant in a way that no production budget can manufacture. It is real. And it belongs to every organisation whose name is associated with making it happen.

"I've heard 'Senzeni Na' a hundred times at school events. I thought I knew it. When the igwijo master explained what it was actually saying, what it was actually doing in the context where it was sung, I will be honest with you: I was angry at myself for not knowing. And then I stood up and sang it, for the first time, as if I understood it. That feeling has no equivalent in any classroom I have ever sat in."

Tomorrow is the final email of this campaign and the final event in the programme.
It is the quietest of the five. And in many ways, the most devastating. Tomorrow I'll take you into the streets of Soweto that no map shows, the safe houses, the burned buildings and the corners where people disappeared. With the veterans who remember every inch of it. This is the campaign's most urgent message, and it will be the last one.
If you have been waiting to register, stop waiting.
