RELIVE YOUR IDENTITY
WHAT: Soweto Heritage Trail: Untold Stories
WHEN: Tuesday, 30 June 2026
TIME: 09:00 - 15:00
WHERE: Soweto Liberation Sites
COST: R3 900
"There is a house on an ordinary Soweto street that sheltered a wanted activist for six weeks in 1976. The family still lives there. No plaque. No heritage marker. No official record. That house exists as history only because one veteran still remembers and is willing to walk you there and point at the door. Today is the last day of this campaign. And this story is the reason the whole programme exists."
This is Day 5, the final email of the Relive Your Identity campaign. Today I want to tell you about the experience that closes the programme on 30 June 2026. And today I need to be direct with you about something:ย registration for all five events closes on the 15th May 2026.ย After the 15th, we move to waiting list only and waiting list does not mean confirmed.
Theย Soweto Heritage Trail: Untold Storiesย is the quietest event in the programme. No performance. No ceremony. Just a veteran, a street, and fifty years of hidden history waiting to be found. Local veterans guide participants through the private geography of the liberation struggle sites that appear in no guidebook, no museum catalogue, no government heritage registerย because they exist only in living memory. Safe houses. Underground meeting spots. Shops burned because their owners were named as informers. Streets where people were last seen. Corners where decisions were made that changed the country.
๐บ๏ธ WHAT THE TRAIL UNCOVERS
โฆ Safe houses and shelter networks โ the civilian families who risked everything to hide activists. Their homes are still standing. Their stories have never been officially documented. Until now.
โฆ Underground meeting sites โ the specific back rooms, church basements, and street corners where the Uprising was planned. Pointed out by the people who were in those meetings.
โฆ Sites of loss and consequence โ where people were arrested, where buildings were burned, and where lives were changed in an instant. The hardest stops on the trail. The most necessary.
โฆ Community resilience sites โ the churches that became save havens, the schools that became organising centres, and the shops whose owners fed activists without asking for payment.
โฆ Your documentation becomes the archive โ everything participants photograph, record, and document on the trail is submitted to the Vonage Heritage Archive. You leave behind something that will outlast all of us.
Here is the truth:ย these sites will cease to exist as heritage the moment the veterans who remember them are no longer alive to point them out.ย There is no second chance. There is no backup plan. There is this trail, on this day, and with these veterans. And there is a looming registration deadline, which is real, enforced, and not subject to extension.
WALK THE HISTORY THAT HAS NEVER BEEN MAPPED. TODAY IS YOUR LAST CHANCE.

"He stopped in front of what looked like an ordinary house. Peeling paint. A rusty gate. A child's bicycle in the yard. He said: 'This is where they hid for six weeks. The whole family knew. Nobody talked.' And I looked at that gate and I thought, that is courage I will never fully understand. And I thought, how close did I come to never knowing this existed? How many streets like this have I walked past without knowing? That question will follow me for the rest of my life."

A final word โ from me, personally.
Vonage YouthDev Solutions turns 10 this year. I have spent 25 years in youth and community development. And in all of that time, I have never built a programme that felt this urgent, this necessary, or this irreplaceable. The veterans who will walk, sit, and sing with our youth in June are not getting younger. The sites we will visit on the Heritage Trail are not getting more visible. The history we carry in this country is not getting any easier to access, unless we actively, and deliberately with every resource we have, go and get it.
That is what Relive Your Identity is all about. A deliberate act of retrieval. A refusal to let South Africa forget what it cost to be free. And an investment of R300 000 from Vonage in ensuring that this generation knows who they are and where they come from.
Register by the 15th May 2026. Share this email now. And if you know an individual, company or government that can fund or sponsor 5 or more youth who cannot afford to come, please do. Every seat is a life changed. Every life changed is a piece of South Africa's future secured.
